Music Theory Holiday Schools

All musicians looking to progress beyond the Grade 5 practical examination with the Associated Board (ABRSM) will need to pass a Grade 5 theory examination.  Our music theory courses are designed to get most of this written work ‘done and dusted’ with the minimum of fuss; either in an intensive two weeks of summer school or at a more leisurely pace by attending the one week Introductory course (see below) one year and the one week Advanced course the following year. When students are almost ready to take their exam, they attend three mornings of exam preparation in the half term break before the examination.

Music Theory Lessons in progress at The Primo School of Music, CardiffBoth of these week long courses run during the first two weeks of the summer holidays. Times are Monday- Friday from 10am-1pm with some homework set to do during the afternoon or evening at home. After the course, students have further work that they can continue with at home which they can bring in to be marked and discussed.

We have two teaching rooms and two teachers available throughout the week which means we have a flexible format that can accommodate students whose current theory knowledge is at different levels.

The teachers are:

Lynne Phillips – BMus (Hons), PGDip, DipABRSM, CTABRSM, MISM, ADG

Tim Riley – MA, Advanced Cert. (Piano) ABRSM

The Introductory course covers  Grade 2 to Grade 3

The Advanced course  covers Grade 4 to Grade 5.

As a minimum requirement, students taking part in the summer school will need to have passed a grade two practical exam (piano or any other instrument) and to have prepared for the week by going through a simple Grade 1 workbook (which we can provide in advance). The minimum age we can cater for is 8. Most of our students are between 10 and 15 years of age.
